HISTORY

Inspired by their professor Atty. Isaias P. Giduquio, then the Director of the Civil Commission, Region X,
a group of doctorate students of Mindanao Polytechnic State College (now the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines) conceived of establishing a school of higher learning at Valencia City (then a municipality) in Bukidnon in the late 1980s. Some of these students abandoned the idea subsequently. Those who persisted formed a non-stock, non-profit corporation for the purpose. The core group members were Atty. Isaias Giduquio himself, Alexander Amador, Irene Antonio, Reynaldo Antonio, Pablito Intong and Isaias Sealza. Other members of the corporation joined afterwards.

When the core group of incorporators established VCI, it was in the spirit of social investment: to
enhance the skills and capacities of the local workforce to enable them to participate more fully in the socioeconomic advancement of Valencia, which was then a municipality, together with that of the Province of Bukidnon as a whole. Huge plantation industries like pineapple, banana, and cassava had flourished in addition to the already prolific rice and corn fields and abundant forestry products that led to employment market diversification and economic affluence. However, the local economy was unprepared and had to bring in a more qualified workforce from the outside. Bukidnon then became a net in-migration province.

By and large, getting good quality education and training from the outside for many households was
financially prohibitive then and even until now because of high transportation and accommodation costs on top of direct school tuition, matriculation and incidental charges. Valencia Colleges (Bukidnon) Inc. was formed to provide affordable education and training. The logo described below served, and continues to serve, as the rallying point.
